A union is an organized group of workers that come together to strengthen their voice when issues arise in the workplace. With union’s aid, workers can negotiate better wages, more reasonable work hours, bring light to health and safety issues, and more. Overall, union support helps ensure fairness and respect in the workplace.
Social security payments, overtime pay, and the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) are just a few of many benefits for workers brought forth by the organized labor movement in America. OSHA grants the authority to issue workplace health and safety regulations. These regulations include limits on hazardous chemical exposure, employee access to hazard information, requirements for the use of personal protective equipment, and requirements to prevent falls and hazards from operating dangerous equipment.
Without the support of a union, employers are free to enforce their own rules and regulations for workers to adhere to. Statistics show that union workers’ wages are 30 percent higher in comparison to nonunion workers. More than 97 percent of union workers have guaranteed health insurance benefits while 85 percent of nonunion workers do. Pensions are also more common within the union- 68 percent of union workers are offered pension plans upon retirement in comparison to 14 percent of nonunion workers. Unions help give a voice back to the individuals and seek to improve the overall morale in the workplace.
